Local Hero Stuns Top Seed as Vietnam Takes Over Singles Draw
| October 2, 2025
Quarterfinal Thursday at the MB Vietnam Cup saw seeds tumble and home heroes rise, with Vietnam dominating the Men’s Singles semifinals in front of a roaring Da Nang crowd.
Hien Truong Breaks Through
The moment of the day belonged to Hien Truong, who finally conquered his nemesis. After falling to Wong Hong Kit at both the Hong Kong Open and last week’s Panas Malaysia Cup, the Vietnamese star flipped the script with authority. Riding a wave of home support, Truong dismantled Asia’s #1 ranked singles player 2-0 (11-4, 11-3) in a performance that announced will have the rest of the draw watching.
Phuc Huynh remains the lone top four seed standing in Men’s Singles, continuing his dominant run at home. The MB Vietnam Open champion hasn’t dropped a game in Da Nang and faces Thomas Yu – the only non-Vietnamese player left in the draw – after Yu’s giant-killing week continued following his earlier upset of top seed Eric Oncins.
Doubles Delivers Drama
While singles saw chaos, doubles mostly followed the script. The exception came when fourth seeds Kim Eunggwon and Wong Hong Kit fell to the Indian duo of Vanshik Kapadia and Harsh Mehta 2-1 (7-11, 11-3, 11-5). The Indians now face a daunting semifinal against defending last week’s Malaysia champions Tyson McGuffin and Eric Oncins.
Ben Johns and Dekel Bar continued their smooth partnership, setting up a semifinal showdown with Armaan Bhatia and Zane Navratil. India’s strong showing continues with three of eight Men’s Doubles semifinalists flying their flag.
Women’s Singles Shakeup
The women’s draw saw its own upheaval as third seed Chao Yi Wang fell to Australia’s Sahra Dennehy 2-1 (11-6, 9-11, 11-5). Last week’s Malaysia finalist Roos van Reek stayed on course for another medal, dispatching fourth seed Hannah Blatt 2-0 (11-4, 11-7).

Roos van Reek is eyeing another trip to a PPA Tour Asia final.
Dennehy and van Reek now battle for a finals spot against either Kaitlyn Christian or Liz Truluck, who meet in the top half semifinal.
Mixed Doubles provided the day’s only predictable results, with all four top seeds advancing to set up premium semifinal matchups.
Friday’s action kicks off at 8am (GMT+7) with all semifinals set to be played out.
