Ly Stuns PPA World Champion Staksrud to Reach Hangzhou Final

Author: PPA Tour Asia | December 5, 2025

Hoang Nam Ly sent shockwaves through Linping Sports Center, toppling top seed Federico Staksrud to end the World Champion’s triple crown bid at the Vibrant Linping Hangzhou Open 2025. Now the Vietnamese star is one match away from the gold that’s eluded him all season.

Ly’s Breakthrough Moment

This is the one Hoang Nam Ly had been waiting for and did he deliver.

The Vietnamese star toppled top seed and reigning PPA World Champion Federico Staksrud 2-0 (11-7, 12-10) in a stunning semifinal upset. The second game went down to the wire, with Ly holding his nerve with everything on the line, denying Staksrud any route back into the contest.

Ly has plenty of medals but no singles gold so far this season. Three bronzes and a silver after falling short in the MB Vietnam Open final. Now he gets another shot at taking the extra step up the podium.

Hoang Nam Ly roars as he soars in to Championship Saturday with a stunning upset.

Wong Continues Rampage

Hong Kit Wong made it look easy. Again.

A day after dismantling World No.3 Connor Garnett, the Hong Kong, China star delivered another masterclass, this time against Hien Truong, 2-0 (11-4, 11-0). Wong was untouchable, handing Truong a bagel in game two to storm into the final seemingly without breaking a sweat on the scorecard.

Wong claimed Men’s Singles gold at the Hong Kong Open earlier this season. Now he’s hunting a second, but standing in his way is a man with absolutely nothing to lose and everything to prove.

Dennehy Eyes Back-to-Back Glory

Sahra Dennehy powered past Nicola Schoeman 2-0 (11-1, 11-1) to book her spot in the Women’s Singles final. The Australian claimed her maiden gold at the MB Vietnam Cup and now has the chance to go back-to-back against Chao Yi Wang, who dispatched hometown favourite Yufei Long 2-0 (11-8, 11-7).

Sahra Dennehy has a chance to close out the season with back-to-back singles tiles.

Wang’s hat-trick hopes ended in the Mixed Doubles semifinals, where Nok Yiu Tang and Eunggwon Kim edged her and partner Armaan Bhatia 2-1 (10-12, 11-9, 11-6). But she remains alive across two events heading into Championship Saturday.

Truong & Do March On

Hien Truong and Quan Do backed up their quarterfinal upset over Connor Garnett and Blaine Hovenier  with another dominant display. The duo swept Tama Shimabukuro and Patrick Haas 2-0 (11-3, 11-4) to reach the Men’s Doubles final. The pair are into their first gold medal match and will face Federico Staksrud and Armaan Bhatia, who edged Thomas Yu and Len Yang 2-1 (11-5, 5-11, 11-9) in a tight three-gamer.

Staksrud’s Double Crown Still Alive

The Argentine’s singles dream is over, but gold remains on the table in two events. Staksrud and Bhatia await Truong and Do in Men’s Doubles, while Staksrud partners Alix Truong in the Mixed Doubles final against Tang and Kim.

Truong herself is chasing back-to-back Mixed Doubles gold after claiming the title with brother Jonathan at the MB Vietnam Cup. She also features in the Women’s Doubles final alongside Wang, where they’ll face Sarah Burr and Jamie Haas. The lefty pairing of Burr and Haas have locked up their first Women’s Doubles medal having each fallen in bronze medal playoffs.

Championship Saturday is Ready

Bronze playoffs kick off at 10am (GMT+8) while the final gold medal showdowns hit the courts 3pm (GM+8).
