McGuffin-Oncins Epic Lights Up Malaysia In Marathon Final
| September 28, 2025
Championship Sunday at the Panas Malaysia Cup 2025 delivered the wildest ride yet, with a packed Kuala Lumpur crowd witnessing the match of the tournament unfold on the Men’s Doubles court.
Tyson McGuffin and Eric Oncins pulled off a stunning upset (11-5, 13-15, 11-9) over top seeds Ben Johns and Christian Alshon in an absolute marathon that had everyone on their feet.
The second game alone was a cinematic showstopper. After sailing away with the opening game to send shockwaves through the stands, they then looked ready to close things out fast in the second. Match point after match point came and went. With zero room for error, Johns delivered a masterclass in backhands rolls as well as perfect leaves, saving multiple championship points. The Alshon-Johns collab was kept alive.
As they changed ends, the pressure cooker atmosphere had players dripping with sweat and fans rocking the bleachers. Once the deciding game kicked off, every rally felt like the final point as both teams refused to blink.
McGuffin lived up to his reputation as the ultimate hype man, pumping up Oncins through every crucial moment. For Oncins, playing his first Championship Sunday, the moment wasn’t too big – it was just right. When they finally converted on their last championship point, Oncins took off on a victory lap around the court, arms raised as the crowd erupted. McGuffin followed, soaking in the golden moment.
Elsewhere in the day, Kaitlyn Christian salvaged a double crown after her triple bid fell short. She dominated Roos van Reek 2-0 (11-2, 11-2) in Women’s Singles, chasing down every ball and finding winners from impossible angles while sliding across the court. Christian then partnered with Chinese Taipei’s Chao Yi Wang to end Townsend and Schoeman’s dream run 2-0 (11-6, 14-12) in Women’s Doubles.
Christian Alshon made sure he didn’t leave Malaysia empty-handed, taking down Hong Kong Open champion Wong Hong Kit 2-0 (11-9, 11-5) in a Men’s Singles final that was more chess match than pickleball. Meanwhile Ben Johns and Anna Bright capped off the tournament with gold, defeating Alshon and denying Christian the triple crown, closing the evening with a convincing 2-0 (11-2, 11-3) Mixed Doubles victory.
The action barely pauses – qualifying for the MB Vietnam Cup kicks off this Tuesday, September 30.
