Mixed Doubles Qualifiers Shock Top Seeds and Vietnam Owns Men’s Singles
| September 5, 2025
The MB Vietnam Open delivered Friday fireworks with qualifier Harsh Mehta and Jamie Haas pulling off the day’s biggest stunner, toppling top seeds AJ Koller and Meghan Dizon in straight games.
The underdog duo wasted no time making their mark, dispatching the favorites 2-0 (11-7, 11-8) in the Mixed Doubles round of 16. No flash in the pan, they immediately backed it up with an 11-3, 11-3 demolition of Sophia Tran and Aryaan Bhatia to punch their semifinal ticket.
While chaos reigned in the top half, second seeds Alix and Jonathan Truong cruised through their side of the draw. The sibling connection proved unstoppable as they refused to concede more than six points in any game, setting up a semifinal clash with #3 seeds Australia’s Danni-Elle Townsend and Joseph Wild.
Vietnam’s men delivered exactly what the home crowd craved – a complete takeover of the singles semifinals. Phuc Huynh led the charge with a stunning dismantling of top seed Wong Hong Kit 2-0 (11-2, 11-5) in the quarterfinals. The Hong Kong Open champion had no answers for Huynh’s barrage.
Third seed Giang Trinh kept his title hopes rolling with straight-game victories throughout the day, setting up a monster semifinal against Huynh. The winner advances to Sunday’s final while Hien Truong and Hoang Nam Ly battle for the other spot in an all-Vietnamese bottom half.
The Women’s Singles saw Sansan Fukuoka Open champion Yufei Long announce her arrival in devastating fashion. The Chinese star surrendered just five total points across two matches, steamrolling into a semifinal meeting with Japan’s Rika Fujiwara.
Fujiwara earned her spot the hard way, surviving a roller-coaster 2-1 (11-2, 9-11, 11-1) battle against fourth seed Danni-Elle Townsend before dispatching local hope Sophia Tran in straight games. The bottom half features Australia’s Sahra Dennehy against Chinese Taipei’s Hsiang Wen Huang.
Saturday brings gendered doubles rounds in the morning before the afternoon delivers Mixed Doubles and Singles semifinals. With qualifiers hunting more upsets and Vietnam guaranteed a Men’s Singles gold, the weekend promises more drama in Ho Chi Minh City.
