Singles Semifinals Secured as Local Siblings Shine
| August 22, 2025
The Wong family delivered for the home crowd on Day 2 at the Hong Kong Open 2025, with both Hong Kit and Hong Yi advancing to their respective singles semifinals.
Top seed Wong Hong Kit continued his march through the Men’s Singles draw, but it was his sister Hong Yi who stole the spotlight with a gutsy 2-1 (11-9, 7-11, 11-4) victory over Panas Malaysia Open silver medalist Nicola Schoeman. The younger Wong showed she’s not living in anyone’s shadow, setting up a semifinal clash with Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Yu-chieh.
The Women’s Singles continued to deliver,as Panas Malaysia Open champion Long Yufei maintained her perfect PPA Tour Asia record, dispatching fellow UPA Asia Trailblazer Wei Ting Chieh in straight games (11-7, 11-8). The victory extends Long’s unbeaten streak to six consecutive matches, though a tougher test is around the corner in the semifinals against Roos van Reek. The Dutch star who dominated Long in their previous meeting 2-0 at the PPA Tour Australia Gold Coast Slam in June.

Vietnam’s dominance was the story in Men’s Singles qualifying, and that momentum carried into the main draw. Wong Hong Kit now stands as the lone non-Vietnamese player in the semifinals, with Panas Malaysia Open champion Giang Trinh joined by qualifiers Hoang Nam Ly and Hien Truong in the final four.
The biggest shocks came in Mixed Doubles, where the top two seeds crashed out in the quarterfinals. Number one seeds Lucas Pascoe and Nicola Schoeman fell to Robert Stirling and Aiko Yoshitomi 2-0 (11-8, 11-7), before second seeds Joseph Wild and Wei Ting Chieh suffered heartbreak against Armaan Bhatia and Xiao Yi Wang-Beckvall in a full-distance thriller 2-1 (5-11, 12-10, 12-10).
Saturday’s gendered Doubles rounds kick off the morning session, before attention turns to the Singles and Mixed Doubles semifinals in the afternoon. With local heroes, revenge matches, and qualifier fairy tales all on the menu, Championship Sunday spots are up for grabs.
