| August 28, 2025
Opening main draw action at the Sansan Fukuoka Open 2025 delivered immediate drama as 14-year-old Tama Shimabukuro announced himself on the PPA Tour Asia stage with a stunning double victory.
The Hawaiian teenager’s breakthrough day began with a dominant 2-0 (11-5, 11-4) upset of Men’s Singles third seed Tyler Loong, ranked #38 on the PPA Tour. Shimabukuro wasn’t done there – partnering with fellow Hawaiian Xiao Yi Wang-Beckvall in Mixed Doubles, he struck again to defeat second seeds Loong and Pei-Chuan Kao 2-1 (11-6, 6-11, 11-6).
Japan’s home favorites delivered their own statement performances. Nasa Hatakeyama continued his impressive singles form with a clinical 2-0 (11-3, 11-4) victory over Eunggwon Kim to reach the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Kenta Miyoshi finally broke through for his first PPA Tour Asia singles win, defeating Malaysia’s Jimmy Liong in straight games (11-8, 11-3) after early exits at the Hong Kong and Panas Malaysia Open.

Kenta Miyoshi has served up his first quarterfinal appearance.
The local success extended to Women’s Doubles, where Rika Fujiwara and Kei Sawaki thrilled the home crowd with a hard-fought 2-1 (10-12, 11-3, 11-9) victory over Hsiang Wen Huang and Ekaterina Biakina.
Friday’s quarterfinal action keeps the heat coming.
Top seed Connor Garnett looks to maintain his flawless record – the American has yet to drop a game across all three events in Fukuoka. Both Seina Shima and Nasa Hatakeyama will aim to ride the wave of local support into their first PPA Tour Asia singles semifinals, facing Sahra Dennehy and Hong Kong Open champion Wong Hong Kit respectively.
The Women’s Singles delivers a clash of silver medalists as #2 Nicola Schoeman, runner-up at the Panas Malaysia Open, takes on Yu-Chieh Hsieh, who fell in the Hong Kong Open final.
With seeds tumbling and local heroes rising, Friday’s quarterfinals are set to deliver more surprises.
